About Aviation Recorders

Business Description:

L-3 Aviation Recorders (L-3AR) is the world’s leading manufacturer of Solid State Cockpit Voice, Flight Data, and Maritime Voyage Recorders, as well as Automatic Identification Systems, and Digital Selective Calling radios for commercial, civil, and military applications.  L-3AR’s recorders, better known as “black boxes,” promote safety by providing safety investigators with reliable information on aircraft, ship or vessel, as well as crew performance in the time leading up to an incident or accident.

As industry pioneers, L-3AR products have set the standards for aviation and maritime data recorder technology, reliability, and survivability. We are leaders in the use of solid state memory chips as a recording medium, having introduced the first commercial solid state Flight Data Recorder in 1989.  From our AS9000 and ISO 9001 certified facility in Sarasota, Florida, our dedicated L-3AR employees support customers worldwide with quality, engineering, production, customer support, marketing, and sales. History of Flight Recorders
One of the greatest safety inventions of the commercial airline industry has been the crash protected flight recorder, more commonly called the “Black Box.” ...

Fairchild
As the designer and manufacturer of Fairchild Aviation Recorders, L-3AR is recognized worldwide for excellent crash survivability, state-of-the-art performance, and low cost of ownership. Over the years, ownership of the product line has passed from Fairchild Camera Corporation to a number of other companies including Schlumberger, Loral, Lockheed Martin, and L-3 Communications.  Throughout these changes, Fairchild recorders have remained in continuous production. As L-3AR, we have carried forward the Fairchild brand name that dates back to 1959, by developing and applying cutting edge technology to all of our products.  An example of this technology is our third generation of solid state flight recorders, better known as the family of FA2100 recorders.  These recorders incorporate our newest design, recording up to 512 data words per second for a minimum of 25 hours, and four channels of audio for two hours. FA2100 recorders also provide operators with power optimization, lightweight, and low operating cost, all while providing the most reliable crash survivable system available.

Ross Engineering
L-3AR acquired substantially all of the assets of Ross Engineering in August of 2002 and has integrated the Ross product lines into the L-3 Communications’ Aviation Recorders Division.  L-3AR has since leveraged Ross Engineering’s experience in marine communications, combining it with L-3’s financial, engineering, manufacturing, and marketing resources. This has allowed L-3 to become a major supplier of Universal Automatic Identification Systems (UAIS), VHF Global Maritime Distress Safety Systems (GMDSS) Base Stations, and Digital Selective Calling (DSC) VHF radios to the maritime industry.  This acquisition has also enabled L-3 to extend its product portfolio into other new product areas within the maritime industry.

L-3 Communications Acquires Flight Systems Engineering
L-3 Communications has acquired substantially all of the assets of Flight Systems Engineering (FSE) and will integrate FSE's product lines into those of L-3 Communications’ Aviation Recorders Division.

Headquartered in Opa Locka, Florida, FSE facilities will move to L-3 Communications' Aviation Recorders (L-3AR) facilities in Sarasota, Florida.

"As a leader in Cabin Surveillance Systems (CSS), and PMA Sensors and Wiring Kits to support aircraft Flight Data Acquisition Unit (FDAU) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) upgrades, the FSE acquisition is a synergistic opportunity to leverage and expand L-3AR's flight recorder product line," said Bruce Coffey, L-3AR President. "FSE provides L-3AR with FAA certified CSS capability.  By leveraging FSE's experience with L-3's financial, engineering, and marketing resources, L-3AR will be able to provide the most technically advanced CSS solution at a competitive price."

FSE’s CSS was designed specifically for aircraft applications and is the first system of its kind to be certified by the FAA. Offering full cabin surveillance capability and an “alert” feature from the cabin crew to the flight deck, FSE's CSS meets or exceeds all applicable RTCA/ DO-160D/JAR-OPS 1.1255 requirements with FAA Parts Manufacturing Approval (PMA). From design draft to aircraft installation and certification, all FSE's CSS components were designed to meet or exceed aircraft-environment specifications, requirements, and reliability.

Experienced in the development of Avionic Equipment STC's, FSE has provided retrofit FDAU/FDR PMA installation kits for Boeing B727, B737, B757, B767, B747, MD80, DC-8, DC-9, DC-10, MD-11 and Airbus A300/310 aircraft, and CSS kits for DC-9 aircraft.
